NBC GETS 7 OLYMPIC NODS; NIKE SAYS "HELLO" TO AD EMMY RACE
Published July 25, 1997
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences yesterday
announced Emmy Awards nominations and NBC received seven for
its coverage of the Opening Ceremonies of the Atlanta
Olympics, according to Lisa de Moraes of the HOLLYWOOD
REPORTER. The nominations were for Art Direction for a
Variety or Music Program; Direction for a Variety or Music
Program; Lighting Direction (Electronic) for a Drama Series,
Variety Series or a Special; Music Direction; Music and
Lyrics (two nominations); and Sound Mixing for a Variety or
Music Series or a Special (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/25).
HELLO AGAIN: In the first year of an Emmy Awards
category for TV commercials, OR-based Wieden & Kennedy (W&K)
and production company PYTKA received a nomination for
Nike's "Hello World" ad featuring Tiger Woods, according to
Steve Brennan of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. W&K partner Jim
Riswald, who created the ad, said the spot "delved into the
area of social comment -- thereby creating considerable
controversy." The ad, which was a topic of discussion on
ABC's "Nightline," featured footage of Woods that
highlighted his achievements and "underscored the fact that
blacks are still unwelcome at some golf courses." Riswald:
"I got calls from people tied to golf who told me I should
be ashamed of myself for talking about this in the
commercial" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 7/25).
