BALANCE SHEET DOESN'T LOOK FAVORABLE FOR TWINS AT MID-SEASON

The Twins "were budgeted" to lose $5.5M this year, but
a "mid-year audit released Wednesday discloses that with
attendance and concession income down, owner Carl Pohlad
will actually lose $11.6 million," according to Sid Hartman
of the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. "Despite the big loss,"
Pohlad has not asked Twins President Jerry Bell or GM Terry
Ryan "to cut expenses." Pohlad, on sentiment he should
contribute $50M toward a new ballpark: "You have to
understand the entire financial problem. Before a new
stadium is built, we will lose another $30 million to $40
million operating in the Metrodome" (STAR TRIBUNE, 7/24).
WHITE SOX REPORT: The White Sox "could lose up to"
$15M this season because they're eighth in AL home
attendance and have to pay an end-of-season luxury tax of
"about" $2M, according to Joe Goddard of the CHICAGO SUN-
TIMES. Sox Chair Jerry Reinsdorf, on potential losses this
season: "I wouldn't give out numbers even if I knew."
Reinsdorf added, "I don't intend to lose any money next
     year. I have a plan. I can't say it's a grand plan, but it
     is a plan" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/23).
