In reviewing ABC's coverage of the British Open, the
CHICAGO TRIBUNE's Michael Hirsley writes the telecast "had
its moments, memorable and not" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7/21). In
Toronto, Rob Longley writes that ABC "put on a show that
entrenched its spot in third on the network leaderboard,
well below NBC and CBS." He adds that ABC's coverage "never
developed a flow" (TORONTO SUN, 7/21). USA TODAY's Rudy
Martzke wrote ABC "bogeyed most of its major tournament
coverage," and graded it a "B- bogey" (USA TODAY, 7/21).
....ESPN "SportsCenter" was cited for outstanding
achievement in sports at the 13th annual Television Critics
Awards (WASHINGTON POST, 7/21)....In Miami, the One-on-One
Sports Network will pay $45M for WCMQ-AM and two other AM
stations being sold by Spanish Broadcasting System. One-on-
One will turn the Spanish station into an all-sports format
in English (MIAMI HERALD, 7/20)....In Washington, WTTG-TV
(Fox) sports anchor Steve Buckhantz will be the new play-by-
play announcer for NBA Wizards games on HTS. He will call
62 regular-season games this season, replacing Mel Proctor
(WASHINGTON POST, 7/19)....Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB was
examined by Geraldine Fabrikant in the N.Y. TIMES under the
header "Shake-Up In Murdoch Company Jars Investors." Former
CEO Sam Chisholm and top aide, David Chance, both resigned
on June 17, "just 16 months" after Murdoch "installed his
29-year old daughter, Elizabeth, in a senior executive
position at the company." Fabrikant: "[T]he British media
industry read the departure as a sign that Ms. Murdoch's
presence was being too strongly felt" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/21).
