BUILDERS SQUARE REMEMBERS THE ALAMO (BOWL) AFTER ACQUISITION

Kmart Corp. announced Thursday that it had sold TX-
based Builders Square, but "all indications are that the
chain's new owners, Leonard Green & Partners, will honor"
its two-year contract extension to sponsor the Alamo Bowl,
according to Tim Griffin of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS.
L.A.-based Green & Partners plans to combine Builders Square
with MD-based Hechinger Co. Sources "indicated" that
Builders Square paid the Bowl "about" $500,000 in its most
recent deal, but the payment "didn't actually cost the
company that much money," as vendors such as Black & Decker,
Glidden and Sylvania "helped underwrite those costs with
     commercial buys and promotions" (S.A. EXPRESS-NEWS, 7/18).
