ESPN EDITORIAL DIR WALSH MAY HEAD NEW ESPN TITLE HIMSELF

ESPN Senior VP/Exec Editor John Walsh "is talking about
becoming" the editor of ESPN's new sports magazine set to
launch in "just seven months," according to sources of
Michael Shain of the N.Y. POST. Despite "the prestige and
high profile" of its editor's job, Walsh "is apparently
having trouble convincing his favored candidates to take
it." Shain adds that the job has been offered to, and
declined by, "at least two editors" -- Daniel Okrent, former
Life editor, who was a finalist for SI's "top spot" last
year, and SI Exec Editor David Bauer. ESPN insiders "say
that with the clock ticking, Walsh ... is telling colleagues
he may end up doing the job himself. At least until a
suitable editor can be found." Shain adds that while
"[h]igher ups are pressing to have the launch date pushed
back," Disney Publishing spokesperson Lisa Kitei "says there
have been no changes" to the March launch (N.Y. POST, 7/16).
