DETAILS OF GIANTS' BALLPARK LEASE TO BE REVIEWED TODAY

The Giants' lease at Pacific Bell Park is scheduled to
be reviewed today by the S.F. Port Commission, according to
Gerald Adams of the S.F. EXAMINER. The 25-year lease, with
an option to renew up to 66 years, includes annual rent
payments of $1.2M, "adjustable for inflation." The Giants
can hold 20 non-MLB events a year, must cover the costs of
environmental cleanup at the site, and will have to manage
traffic in the China Basin neighborhood before and after
games. Also, the name Pacific Bell Park "is not necessarily
permanent, according to the lease," as long as the Giants
give the Port 90 days notice. Aside from tobacco ads,
signage can be installed on the scoreboard and anywhere else
inside or outside the ballpark. While the port area is
exempt from taxes, the Giants will have to pay "possessory
interest taxes -- placed on private uses of normally exempt
city-owned property -- and taxes on admissions." After the
Commission votes on the lease, the Board of Supervisors will
have final review (S.F. EXAMINER, 7/16).
