L.A. JUDGE RULES THAT AVP CAN'T CHARGE AT HERMOSA BEACH
Published July 11, 1997
An L.A. Superior Court judge "blocked" the AVP's bid to
charge for seats at the upcoming Hermosa Beach Open,
according to Alan Abrahamson in the L.A. TIMES. Judge
Robert O'Brien's ruling "follows a state Coastal Commission
ruling in May that bars charging admission to any event held
on a public beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day." The
AVP "said in court papers that it would lose $150,000 if it
could not charge for seats" to the event, which doubles as
the U.S. Championships. AVP Attorney Jim Evans "said an
appeal ... remains an option" (L.A. TIMES, 7/11).
