DENVER MAYOR SAYS '97 STADIUM VOTE DOUBTFUL

Denver Mayor Wellington Webb said Wednesday that "he
doubts a November election can be held on a new Broncos
football stadium because of the delays caused by a feud over
unpaid bills of the site selection committee," according to
Michael Booth of the DENVER POST. Webb: "I think the
November election is difficult at best" (DENVER POST, 7/10).
Broncos lobbyist Porter Wharton, on delaying a stadium vote:
"That would be a serious problem for us. It's no
exaggeration that we are having a very difficult time
remaining a competitive franchise" (Kevin Flynn, ROCKY
MOUNTAIN NEWS, 7/10). Wharton "hinted" yesterday that the
Broncos would accept the sports complex off I-25 as the site
for a new stadium, after committee reports showed "major
traffic and construction problems" at the proposed Stapleton
airport site (Michael Booth, DENVER POST, 7/10).
