SPURS FINANCES LEAD TO DILLER'S DEPARTURE AS TEAM PRESIDENT

Spurs President Jack Diller will step down from his
role with the team and serve in an "advisory position,"
according to Glenn Rogers of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS.
Spurs Chair Peter Holt and Diller made the announcement
yesterday and "both said that finances dictated the move."
Diller was reportedly set to earn $800,000 each of the next
two years as part of his five-year deal signed in May '94.
His agreement "with the Spurs now will pay him a more
nominal sum" in his new role. Holt said the move "just made
sense in terms of the team's economics," and that Diller
will not be replaced. Diller will retain his 1.88%
ownership of the team and while he has no "immediate plans,"
Rogers reports speculation "is that Diller ... will join the
NHL expansion franchise in Nashville" (EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/25).
