SHOWDOWN FOR LEAFS AND TORONTO COUNCIL OVER UNION STATION

Plans for a new Maple Leafs Gardens at Union Station
"will die today unless the hockey franchise makes Toronto
council a better cash offer" for land it needs to build the
C$300M arena, according to Don Wanagas of the TORONTO SUN.
But Leafs officials said yesterday "there's no way" they'll
pay more than the C$34M the team offered last week. MLG VP
Tom Anselmi: "That's the bottom line. ... The economics of
the project just don't allow it to go any higher" (TORONTO
SUN, 6/24). If the Union Station site is unworkable, the
team would now "either stay at the aging Gardens for a
couple of years or quickly pursue an alternate site" (Lance
Hornby, TORONTO SUN, 6/24). Also in Toronto, Craig Daniels
writes that the appearance of MLG minority partner Larry
Tanenbaum's name on a MLG press release is "a further signal
of his growing control and influence at the Gardens in the
wake of the board changes last month" (TORONTO SUN, 6/24).
