BORNSTEIN'S REMARKS ON MURDOCH DRAW RESPONSE FROM FOX

Criticism of News Corp. Chair Rupert Murdoch by ABC
Sports/ESPN President Steve Bornstein on ABC's "Nightline"
last Thursday night "was unexpected," according to Richard
Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. In the telecast, Bornstein
"questioned Fox's sports TV strategy" (see THE DAILY, 6/13).
Bornstein, when asked about the comments by the TIMES'
Sandomir: "All I said was the truth. I was commenting on
the industry, in which I have a unique insight." He also
said he "never thought" there was anything wrong with an ABC
Sports head commenting on a rival on an ABC News program.
Sandomir writes that "Nightline" would have "benefited by
also enlisting someone more independent to comment, as
opposed to a direct competitor." Fox Sports co-Exec
Producer Ed Goren, on Bornstein's remarks: "Maybe Steve had
some bad information. Maybe he's feeling the effects of
competition [from Fox Sports properties] ... 'Nightline' may
have won a lot of awards for journalism, but that show was
     self-serving and distorted" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/17).
