The Carolina Hurricanes unveiled their team logo
yesterday, a "flashy version" of the symbol seen on radar
maps when a hurricane is approaching, with a puck at the eye
of the storm surrounded by red, black and silver streaks
shaped like the letter "C," according to Steve Politi of the
Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Team Owner Peter Karmanos and GM
Jim Rutherford displayed the logo in front of about 1,000
local civic leaders and businessmen, in a presentation which
"befitted the logo -- glitzy, colorful, made for
television." The team also unveiled a secondary logo: a
storm-warning flag hanging from a hockey stick with a
Triangle in the background, which will be on the arm of the
jerseys. Regarding the look, Karmanos' "one demand was that
the logo have a traditional hockey look, as opposed to
strange colors and cartoon mascots." Karmanos: "We're tired
of the comic-book kinds of things. We were willing to give
up a few early retail sales for something that will last."
T-shirts and caps were available "immediately" after the
unveiling and GM Rutherford said jerseys "should be
available in a couple of weeks" (NEWS & OBSERVER, 6/17).
NAME SETTLEMENT: The NEWS & OBSERVER's Politi also
reported that the NHL reached agreement with Raleigh lawyer
Robert Holmes to have exclusive use of the name Hurricanes.
Under the deal, Holmes, who had filed a claim on "Carolina
Hurricanes Hockey Inc," "apparently withdrew his claim to
the name." GM Jim Rutherford and NHL VP/Communications
Arthur Pincus "said they didn't know the details of the
agreement, which they say was reached by NHL attorneys and
Holmes on Saturday." Earlier Monday, the team filed a
letter of protest with the NC Sec. of State and said it
would file a federal lawsuit, but "it is not clear" if the
team will still take legal action (NEWS & OBSERVER, 6/17).
