ATLANTA CITY COUNCIL APPROVES AGREEMENT FOR ARENA

The Atlanta City Council approved the new downtown
arena deal 14-0 yesterday after eliminating a proposal that
"could have jeopardized" the $213M project, according to
Henry Unger of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. The proposal would
have linked the arena's approval to the removal of an offer
by TBS, owner of the Hawks, to provide politicians a free
luxury box at the facility. But the council voted 10-4 to
handle the luxury box issue another time. Unger notes the
"last remaining hurdle" is the Fulton County Commission,
which is scheduled to vote next Wednesday, the same day the
NHL is expected to announce whether Turner will be
recommended for an Atlanta expansion franchise, which would
require a new arena. Turner execs and Atlanta Mayor Bill
Campbell have "urged" the commission to call a special
meeting before Wednesday to "reassure" the NHL. So far, no
special session is planned (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 5/30).
