AVP EYES RETURN TO MANHATTAN BEACH DESPITE FREE ADMISSION

The AVP's Manhattan Beach tournament "may be back on,"
next to the Manhattan Beach Pier as planned, according to
Deborah Belgum of the L.A. TIMES. The CA Coastal Commission
ruled recently that the AVP would not be allowed to sell
tickets for the tournament, as the beach event "would be
totally free -- if held there." There was speculation the
AVP may move to another site where they could charge
admission. AVP COO Lon Monk: "We will be going to Manhattan
Beach. We have decided that for one year, we are not going
to abandon the tradition of the Manhattan Beach Open." A
grass-roots group called the South Bay Coastal Alliance is
"trying to stop the event by seeking a preliminary
injunction," with a hearing set for June 5. The AVP event
is scheduled for June 12-15 (L.A. TIMES, 5/28).
