NBA ARBITRATION RULING UPHOLDS ARENA REVENUE RULING

"By a 2-1 margin, an NBA arbitration appeals panel
upheld an earlier ruling that excludes stadium naming rights
revenues from the players salary cap pool even if the naming
rights payment goes directly to the team," according to Dan
Wasserman of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Wasserman: "The panel
unanimously upheld rulings that pouring rights ... are
included in the players salary cap and upfront payments on
sponsorships count in the year in which they are received"
     (Newark STAR LEDGER, 5/27).
CHILD'S PLAY: On CNN's "Impact," Bernard Shaw examined
high school players turning pro in a half-hour segment: "For
every player that makes it to the NBA, tens of thousands
will never realize their hoop dreams. Yet a recent survey
shows that two-thirds of all African-American males believe
they can earn a living playing pro sports. Despite the odds
against them, young hoopsters see the big money of the big
time and question the value of a diploma" (CNN, 5/25).
