DENVER MAYOR LOOKS TO LEVEL MCNICHOLS AND BUILD STADIUM

Denver Mayor Wellington Webb "endorses the razing" of
McNichols Arena as part of a deal for the new Pepsi Center,
"saying it would clear the way for a new football stadium"
at the McNichols site, according to Alan Snel of the DENVER
POST. Webb had "publicly clung to the idea of saving
McNichols provided it didn't compete with" the planned Pepsi
Center. Webb also called the cost of a Mile High Stadium
renovation "exorbitant" and said that costs associated with
road and utility improvements for a new football stadium at
Stapleton Airport "would be too high." Snel writes that "in
favoring the McNichols site, Webb rejected the location
preferred by Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen" (DENVER POST, 5/28).
