MLS Commissioner Doug Logan told THE DAILY that the
league has had a "series of discussions at a variety of
levels" with CBS, Fox and Turner Broadcasting, as early
negotiations have begun for the league's next TV package.
MLS is currently in the second of a three-year deal with
ESPN and ABC. Logan said CBS, Fox and Turner have had
"varying levels of interest," but he added that he is a
"firm believer that you give the incumbent a chance to grow
with the league." MLS Exec VP Randy Bernstein added that
the league is currently working with ESPN on a renewal or
extension of the existing package, which Bernstein called
the league's "first choice" (THE DAILY).
BROADCAST NEWS: Logan said that he "would like to see
an expansion of the broadcast side versus cable" in the next
TV package. The current deal calls for ESPN to carry seven
games in '97, with 24 on ESPN2. ABC will carry only the
league's championship game, MLS Cup '97. Logan said the MLS
has "no plans to create an additional package," but added,
"However if someone can supply us with a compelling reason
to do so, whether the reasons be economic, exposure, or
brand building, then we'd have to look at it" (THE DAILY).
