POLL SHOWS TIGER IS EARNING HIS STRIPES FROM THE PUBLIC
Published May 2, 1997
A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows that Tiger
Woods "has shot past even" Michael Jordan in public
approval, according to Albert Hunt of the WALL STREET
JOURNAL. Pollster Peter Hart, who conducted the survey with
Robert Teeter, on Woods' popularity: "A telling comparison
is that Tiger Woods's popularity today is greater than
Norman Schwarzkopf's and Colin Powell's the week after the
Persian Gulf War." Woods and Jordan are "known by virtually
all Americans" -- more than 90% for Woods and more than 95%
for Jordan. Their popularity is "across the board, with
soaring positives among every age, regional, professional,
racial and political subgroup" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/2):
