One week after he withdrew from a tournament after
making racially insensitive remarks about Tiger Woods, Fuzzy
Zoeller "kidded" with a black golfer Monday about eating
fried chicken and watermelon, according to Thomas Bonk in
the L.A. TIMES. While at a pro-am in South Carolina, the
black golfer, Victor McBryde, called to Zoeller, "Hey
Fuzzy," and Zoeller responded, "Go get you some fried
chicken." McBryde answered "by telling Zoeller not to
forget the cornbread." Zoeller replied: "How about some
watermelon?" (L.A. TIMES, 4/29). CNN/SI's Nick Charles
spoke with Zoeller via phone and Zoeller read a statement:
"I've had a lot of time to think over the past several days.
Race has been a serious issue in this country for years, but
it still seems to me that we have to stop being so sensitive
about things. ... If we don't all learn to laugh at each
other, and ourselves, were not ever going to get along."
Zoeller, asked by Charles what he thought was funny about
the remarks: "Everybody's laughing, we're having a good
time. No harm intended, no pun intended" (CNN/SI, 4/28).
