49ERS AIM TO SHOW DETAILS OF DEAL TO SWAY SKEPTICAL VOTERS

In an effort to "win over fence-sitting voters," S.F.
Mayor Willie Brown and the 49ers "are expected to come out
this week with a new agreement that will try to nail down
key terms of the $535 million stadium-shopping mall deal,"
according to Matier & Ross in a front-page piece in today's
S.F. CHRONICLE. The agreement will "firm up" the team's
financial responsibilities before the package goes to voters
June 3. The idea is "to defang critics who say the stadium
deal has too many open-ended questions about the costs to
the city." Sources close to the talks say the agreement
will include the following: Cement the $100M cap on the
city's investment; require the team to put up $4 in advance
for every $1 the city puts into the deal; clarify all cost
overruns to be paid by the team; clarify that the team would
cover all infrastructure costs and all expenses for
improving roadways; and require that the city pay for half
of most stadium maintenance costs (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/28).
