Nike and the Federation International de Volleyball
(FIVB) will present the 1997 Beach Volleyball World
Championships at the UCLA Tennis Center in L.A. on September
10-13, with some of the world's top players scheduled to
compete. The total prize money of $600,000 is the largest
ever for a single tournament and will be divided equally
between men and women (Nike). BRANDWEEK's Terry Lefton
notes the event, run by Nike Sports Entertainment, will air
Sunday, September 14 on NBC. It will follow the NFL in most
of the country and "most likely generate unprecedented
ratings for a sport that generally" gets ratings in the 2's.
Nike is selling foreign TV rights and event sponsorships and
the event will also allow Nike "to better leverage its
stable of volleyballers" (BRANDWEEK, 3/24 issue).
