          Figure skating star SCOTT HAMILTON, 38, was diagnosed
     with testicular cancer yesterday (WASHINGTON POST, 3/20)....
     CORKY MEINECKE, a Detroit Free Press sports writer since '88
     and most recently the Pistons beat writer, died Tuesday
     night after a long battle with cancer.  He was 44 (DETROIT
     FREE PRESS, 3/20)....ARNOLD PALMER, on becoming a
     spokesperson for cancer: "I really want to think that out
     before I get involved.  On my own, I will try to make people
     aware of the possibilities of having cancer, but I'm not
     trying to be a hero" (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/20)....In
     Philadelphia, Phil Jasner reports that during yesterday's
     morning shootaround "what apparently started out as a
     conversation" between 76ers ALLEN IVERSON and JERRY
     STACKHOUSE "escalated into some pushing and shoving." 
     Stackhouse said later: "It went from joking around to a more
     heated conversation.  It was the kind of thing that
     shouldn't ever happen, but sometimes does.  And I'm not
     saying it won't happen again.  But we've kissed and made up"
     (PHILA. DAILY NEWS, 3/20).
