LEAGUE NOTES

In Chicago, Dave Van Dyck noted that White Sox Chair
Jerry Reinsdorf "did not participate in the 10-member
conference call" with MLB's Executive Council last Thursday
in ratifying the new labor deal. The absence is "seen by
some close to the situation as an abstention or sign of
protest" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 3/19)....David Falk, on Michael
Jordan: "If Michael Jordan leaves the game, for two or three
years, the NBA's going to go through a very significant
decline" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 3/20)....The LPGA, USGA and
Girl Scouts of the USA have joined in a "landmark union"
aimed at attracting more young women to play golf. The
three organizations announced plans to designate 15 sites
across the U.S. as Partnership Sites, golf courses where the
groups will teach girls ages 7-17 (N.Y. TIMES, 3/20)....PGA
and Senior PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem is "studying
the feasibility" of another tour for golfers older than 50.
Finchem has his staff putting together a business plan for a
tour of about 15 events that would function somewhat like
the Nike Tour, which is a training ground for players who
aspire to the PGA Tour. Finchem: "We might have one
umbrella sponsor or we might have more than one sponsor"
(USA TODAY, 3/19)....Gwathmey Siegel, in collaboration with
Bargmann Hendrie + Archetype, has been named the architect
firm for the $85-100M expansion of the Basketball Hall of
Fame and the Springfield Riverfront. Harris Production
Services has been named exhibit designer (Hall of Fame).
...In Maryland, Gov. Parris Glendening's administration told
MD legislators it opposed supplying money to aid the horse-
racing industry this year and "made clear" it would only
support developing a commission to study the issue. Gov.
Glendening said he would like to find a "long-term" plan to
help the industry and will review its marketing efforts to
target younger fans (Baltimore SUN, 3/19).
