A BIG BUMMER FOR ALL BEACH COMBERS: DAYS OF FREE AVP OVER?

A Manhattan Beach, CA, City Council agreement to permit
seating charges could stop a 30-year tradition of free
admission to volleyball tournaments at Manhattan Beach,
according to this morning's L.A. TIMES. The city "intends"
to sign a two-year deal with the AVP if the CA Coastal
Commission passes the plan in May. On Tuesday, the Council
voted 4-1 to change its local coast plan to permit one event
promoter a year to sell all of the seating. Under a deal
with the AVP, "the promoter will be responsible for funding
the event, which has received up to $40,000 in funds from
the city in the past" (L.A. TIMES, 3/20).
