SAN DIEGO RESIDENTS SAY CITY TARNISHED BY STADIUM DEBACLE

San Diego residents feel the recent stadium "ruckus
tarnished the city's image and cast an unflattering light on
its elected officials," according to a recent survey cited
by Gerry Braun in the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The survey
of 610 registered voters was conducted March 5-10 for the
Union-Tribune and the local NBC affiliate by the Social
Science Research Lab at San Diego State Univ. Regarding the
expansion issue at Jack Murphy Stadium, 25% of respondents
said the issue was "unimportant to them," 40% said it was
"somewhat important" and 35% said it was "very important."
Of those surveyed, 24% said the deal "primarily benefited"
the Chargers, 18% said it "primarily benefited the city" and
51% said it "benefited both equally." A January survey had
found 54% "felt it benefited the Chargers primarily and only
7% felt the city got the better end of the deal." Telecom
company Qualcomm's $18M naming rights proposal was favored
by 71% and opposed by 22% (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/16).
