BEARS CLOSE TO LANDING NEW CAVE WITH MCDOME

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and IL Gov Jim Edgar "have
joined forces on McDome" and the Bears are "on the brink of
an agreement" with McCormick Place, according to Spielman &
Pompei in the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Bears President & CEO Mike
McCaskey said that he "had no real feel" whether
negotiations would lead to the long-term lease necessary for
IL General Assembly approval. Another issue is the Bears'
willingness to meet Edgar's request to provide $175M to the
project. That contribution, outlined in Edgar's February
'96 plan, would come from revenues from PSLs, skyboxes and
club seats. McCaskey: "Let's let the process of discussions
go on before we start staking things out." Daley, who had
earlier wanted to renovate Soldier Field or use the Meigs
Field airport for a stadium site, "changed the subject when
asked whether he was willing to support McDome during the
spring legislative session" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 3/14).
