ORIOLES FINANCIAL REPORT GETS A SAVE FROM '96 PLAYOFFS

Orioles Owner Peter Angelos "informed his fellow
investors" that the team lost between $4M and $5M last year,
and would have lost nearly $4M more "if the team had not
recouped about half its regular-season financial losses with
the proceeds from post-season play," according to Peter
Schmuck of the Baltimore SUN. Angelos held his annual
spring training weekend for his investors to brief them on
the status of the club. Orioles VP/Business & Finance Joe
Foss said the club made "nearly" $4M in extra revenue from
the five postseason games that were played at Camden Yards.
That came from concession sales, parking and the team's
share of gate receipts. The Orioles "hope that the club's
recent increase in ticket prices will allow the team to
break even" in '97. Foss estimates that in a "best-case
scenario," the club "could realize another" $7M in ticket
revenue, plus added concession revenues if the club's
attendance exceeds projections (Baltimore SUN, 3/09).
