CART'S PATH OPENS IN MIAMI; GOSSIP ON PENSKE GOING TO INDY

CART opens its season on Sunday with the Marlboro Grand
Prix of Miami. In L.A., Shav Glick writes the "cast of
characters is pretty much the same, the enthusiasm is high
and all indications point to a prosperous and successful
racing season" (L.A. TIMES, 2/28). In Chicago, Skip
Myslenski notes the "rumor" that CART's Roger Penske and Al
Unser have "discussed the possibility" of running in the
IRL's Indy 500. Unser: "The comment Roger was making to me
was he wants to build his own car and engine and I think if
he builds them to specifications, the IRL should let him
run." Myslenski writes that Penske and IRL CEO Tony George
"haven't even begun discussing" a possible return to Indy,
but that a Penske "defection" from CART to Indy "would have
some trickle down effects" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 2/28).
