SERIOUS, HYPE, ON CBS: IMG TO PRODUCE WOODS MASTERS SPECIAL

CBS will broadcast "Tiger Woods: Son, Hero and
Champion," a one-hour special, on April 13, as the lead-in
to the network's final-round coverage of the Masters,
according to Langdon Brockinton of INSIDE MEDIA. CBS paid
an undisclosed rights fee for the broadcast, which is being
produced by Trans World Int'l, the TV arm of IMG. Sources
tell Brockinton that Titleist and MasterCard have each
bought a quarter-sponsorship on the show and two other
quarter-sponsorships remained unsold as of late last week,
but Nike is said to be talking with CBS. Brockinton's
sources estimate the cost of a 30-second spot for the show
to be $60-70,000. While "as in years past" Cadillac and
Travelers are the only national advertisers on the '97
Masters telecasts, Brockinton notes that as its lead-in for
final-round coverage, "Son, Hero and Champion" will give its
sponsors "a Masters association of sorts" (INSIDE MEDIA,
2/26). USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand notes that Woods is
represented by IMG, but that CBS Sports VP/Programming Rob
Correa says "he's comfortable with Woods' representatives
creating" what he hopes will be the "defining special on
Tiger." TWI Producer Brian Williams: "Tiger just wanted
one story told, and we decided we could do it as well as
anyone. It will be objective" (USA TODAY, 2/26).
