NFL DECIDES NOT TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION IN SAN DIEGO

NFL President Neil Austrian said the league has no
intention of "immediately pulling" the Super Bowl from San
Diego, "regardless of what a Superior Court judge rules on
the stadium case today," according to Barry Bloom in the SAN
DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. If the opposition prevails, former
City Councilman Bruce Henderson has requested the judge give
the city 10 days to "bring its contract with the Chargers up
to snuff" before stopping construction. The NFL also
intends to wait 10 days before making a decision on whether
to move Super Bowl XXXII to Pasadena. Austrian said that
even if the judge halted construction today, "that wouldn't
signal immediate action." Bloom writes that if the city
loses today, "it will be placed in the position of trying to
renegotiate the entire $78 million deal with the Chargers in
less than two weeks to satisfy the opposition, retain the
Chargers for next season and settle the Super Bowl
situation" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/20). David Brodsly,
VP at bond-rating agency Moody's, said that "despite the
uncertainty" surrounding San Diego's stadium expansion,
buyers of the lease-revenue bonds "aren't losing sleep" (SAN
     DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/20).
