MEDIA NOTES

CBS' coverage of the Daytona 500 on Sunday drew a
preliminary overnight rating of a 6.9, up from a 6.5 last
year in 33 metered markets. For a complete list of ratings,
see #28 (Nielsen Sports). In N.Y., Richard Sandomir writes
CBS produced the type of "programming expertise that helps"
NASCAR's "obsession to expand its attraction beyond its
traditional geographic and demographic roots." But he
criticizes CBS announcers for "never" explaining the "key
racing strategy" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/18). In Toronto, Rob
Longley writes, "Great race, boring ending and sloppy effort
by CBS is the order of finish" (TORONTO SUN, 2/17).
...SportsLine USA President Michael Levy, on negotiations
with CBS: "We've been looking for a media partner, and the
talks we've had are promising." If talks with CBS do lead to
a deal, Levy said "We think we could go public sometime this
year" (N.Y. TIMES, 2/18)....NBA Senior VP Rod Thorn will
appear on AOL tonight at 9:00 pm ET. Location: AOL Live.
Keyword: FBN (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/16)....FCB San Francisco
office was chosen to market MLB on Fox Sports Net. FCB
President Jack Boland said his agency will create 40-50
different TV ads to run during the MLB season on the nine
RSNs co-owned by Fox and Liberty Media, saying the air time
is valued at $20M (S.F. CHRONICLE, 2/15)....In San Jose,
Colin Seymour writes it is "good" for Fox to move its NHL
telecasts to Saturday: "Hockey attracts only fanatics with
East Coast roots who attend games, conventional wisdom and
ratings number say. Fox has a few weeks to prove otherwise
before the NCAA basketball tournament on CBS stiffens the
competition next month" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 2/15).
