DON'T PUT REEBOK IN CANTON JUST YET ... BUT PERHAPS SOON

Canton, MA, Exec Secretary William Friel said that
Reebok Int'l, "after two years of negotiations," has won
"initial approval," and an estimated $11.8M tax break, to
build its headquarters in Canton on a 42-acre parcel of
land, according to Chris Reidy of the BOSTON GLOBE. While
Reebok still needs to obtain additional permits and
approvals, Reebok Facilities Dir Douglas Noonan said the
initial approval represents an "important milestone in the
process" of building the new headquarters by '99 or early
2000. Reebok is currently headquartered in Stoughton, "but
much of its staff is scattered in four other buildings in
two neighboring towns." Noonan said that a Canton
headquarters would allow Reebok to "bring most of its 1,100
headquarters employees under one roof." In return for the
tax break, Reebok has agreed to build a complex with a
"minimum footprint of 400,000 square feet," and to preserve
some "green space on its parcel and to make efforts to hire
local residents and contractors" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/12).
