CBS' COUNTRY STRATEGY OPENING UP MORE SPORTS OPTIONS?

Westinghouse/CBS has agreed to purchase cable networks
TNN: The Nashville Network and CMT: Country Music TV, from
Gaylord Entertainment in a stock deal worth $1.55B,
according to Battaglio & Collier of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
The deal "will give CBS a solid position in the cable
industry after years of standing by and watching its
competitors expand their holdings." TNN is the eighth-
largest cable network in the country with 65.3 million
households, and in addition to airing country music, it airs
sports programming that appeals to the country audience,
including NASCAR. CBS CEO Peter Lund said the network would
consider putting other sports events on TNN during the
weekend, when the network airs sports programming (HOLLYWOOD
REPORTER, 2/11). In N.Y., Jon Elsen notes Westinghouse
"will now have more leverage" buying sports programming and
gain distribution for its programming (N.Y. POST, 2/11).
