NAMES IN THE NEWS

          49ers Owner EDWARD DEBARTOLO, JR. was charged with
     battery for an altercation with a Packers fan after the
     49ers playoff loss in Green Bay on January 4.  If DeBartolo
     pays a $649 fine, he will not have to appear in Green Bay
     court (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/23)....SHELDON KENNEDY of the
     Bruins was given 640 acres of land in British Columbia by a
     Canadian business, on which he's going to build a home for
     abused Canadian youths.  Kennedy came forward to tell of his
     history of abuse by former junior hockey coach Graham James
     (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/23)....The Raptors' CARLOS ROGERS appeared
     on the NBC's "Today" to discuss his plans to donate a kidney
     to his sister, if necessary.  Rogers' sister, Rene, is on
     kidney dialysis and doctors say she most likely will need a
     transplant to survive.  Rogers said he and his younger
     brother are potential matches for Rene.  Rogers, on the
     career risk of a transplant: "I am a professional basketball
     player, but I've always been a family-oriented person and my
     sister and my family is first and foremost in my life"
     ("Today," NBC, 1/23).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown.
