FRANCHISE NOTES

In N.Y., Gary Myers notes that Bill Walsh is "unlikely"
to continue his role as consultant to the 49ers coaching
staff. He is expected to get "a larger role in
administration and personnel" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/10).
...Red Auerbach and Red Holzman serve as head coaches for
the '97 Schick Rookie Game on February 8 during the NBA's
All-Star Weekend (NBA)....In N.Y., Steve Zipay notes that
the NHL's Board of Governors won't vote on the proposed sale
of the Islanders to TX businessperson John Spano at its
meeting next week because the TV rights deal with
SportsChannel has not been finalized (NEWSDAY, 1/10).
...Former Cowboys QB Danny White, on HBO's "Inside the NFL":
"I think [Cowboys Owner] Jerry Jones' style of doing
business is what has destroyed the institution of the Dallas
Cowboys. In a few short months, they basically destroyed
what had taken a lot of good people 25 years to build. I
guess I will always be a little bitter about that" (HBO).
...Hornets Owner George Shinn still does not have a lease
agreement on a proposed new 20,000-seat arena for a
prospective NHL franchise in Hampton Roads, VA. Tom Ward,

bid if he has no deal (Newport DAILY PRESS, 1/9).
