FRANCHISE NOTES

          Durham, NC, was awarded one of two expansion franchises
     for Class AAA baseball that will begin play in the '98
     season.  The team will be owned by a partnership consisting
     of Capitol Broadcasting Co., Inc., which currently owns the
     Durham Bulls of the Class A Carolina League, and the Devil
     Rays (NAPBL)....The Isles hold a news conference scheduled
     today to formally announce the completion of the sale of the
     team to TX-businessman John Spano (N.Y. TIMES, 11/26).
