Published October 8, 1996
BERNARD KING has informed NJ Gov. CHRISTIE TODD WHITMAN that he did not wish to be named as a commissioner on the NJ Sports & Exposition Authority. He was nominated September 19 (NEWSDAY, 10/8). ...Tennis champion GUILLERMO VILAS is interviewed by PETER BODO in the latest TENNIS magazine. Vilas, on the image of today's tennis players: "Agents are all trying to make their guys uncontroversial and smooth because they want to develop certain images for them ... Today, it's like guys don't know who they are or who they want to be." Vilas: "Players hang around their agents too much. Agents are pretty square. They're not going to know, never mind want to go, if the Rolling Stones are playing in some small club in a bad part of town. It isn't good for business" (TENNIS, 11/96 issue)....CHARLES BARKLEY on TIGER WOODS: "Tiger Woods is probably the most important person in sports since Jackie Robinson as far as that situation [shouldering the aspirations of blacks]. ... All the black guys are very proud of what he has accomplished. And we're behind him 110 percent, but it's going to be a long, tough struggle" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 10/8).
