WHO WILL STOP THE WAYNE? MARLINS OWNER EYES NEW POND

Marlins Owner Wayne Huizenga said he will "give serious
thought" to building a baseball-only stadium for his team,
located either on the 110 acres he owns next to Pro Player
Stadium or adjacent to his Panthers' proposed Sunrise arena,
according to Barry Jackson in the MIAMI HERALD. Huizenga
revealed that his "other option" is making major renovations to
Pro Player Stadium, including adding a dome. Huizenga plans a
decision "in about a year" and explained that he "was not leaning
in any direction" and that the Dolphins will remain at Pro Player
under either scenario. Huizenga hired HOK Facilities Group to
help analyze options: "We've asked HOK to take a look at what it
would take to make Pro Player Stadium into a better baseball
facility and what the smart decision is. We are in the
exploratory stages. ... Our venue situation is not good. Joe
Robbie gets a lot of credit for building the facility privately.
He did a nice job, but didn't finish the place. So we have sunk
a lot of money into finishing it." Sources put "major"
renovations at Pro Player, including adding a dome, costing "at
least" $100M. Huizenga reportedly could use his soon-to-be-
public company, Florida Panther Holdings, "as a vehicle to
finance the new facility." He could build it on land just north
of the Sunrise arena that he currently has an option to buy.
Another "option" is selling the Marlins "if they continue to lose
millions" (MIAMI HERALD, 10/24).
