Leagues and Governing Bodies

WNBA, PART II: MONEYLINE EXAMINES HARDWOOD COMPETITION

The WBNA and ABL were examined by CNN's Sean Callebs on
"Moneyline." Callebs: "They united for the gold, but now the
best women's players in the world are split by two professional
leagues." Sports marketing firm Blackman & Raber CEO Marty
Blackman: "I really don't think that the United States at this
time can carry two women's leagues. Something sometime shortly
is going to have to give." Callebs analyzed the potential for
two rival women's hoop leagues, concluding, "With limited dollars
for advertising and sponsorships, some marketers argue the dream
could fade and the legacy could be two failed leagues instead of
just one that would have survived" ("Moneyline," CNN, 10/23).
ESPN's Keith Olbermann, on the survival of both the ABL/WNBA:
"[Is] there room for two leagues? If you find somebody who says
yes, say nothing to him or her about Santa or the tooth fairy"
("SportsCenter," ESPN, 10/23).
