LEAGUE NOTES

CFL Chair John Tory told Marty York in the Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL that the CFL folding this year and resurrecting next season
under a new name to eliminate debt and the "meddlesome" players
association is not an "option." Tory: "As much as the stigma of
folding and washing your hands of creditors seems to have been
more socially acceptable than it used to be, we still think our
reputation would suffer. And I guarantee you that I would not be
any part of such a scheme" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 10/18).
...Travis Lee's record $10M contract with the D'Backs was
rejected by MLB officials because part of the signing bonus was
to be paid after December 31, 1997, which violates MLB rules
(N.Y. POST, 10/18)....Nashville officials "weren't very pleased"
to read reports that NHL expansion will be delayed one season
until '98-99 as city insiders say they "have been assured they
will get the word" at the NHL's meetings December 12 that they
and Atlanta will receive teams (THE SPORTING NEWS, 10/21
issue)....Bob Uecker, on MLB Acting Commissioner Bud Selig:
"Anybody who blames him for what's happened in baseball is, I
think, totally out of whack" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 10/18).
