DELAYS MAR WARRIORS' OAKLAND COLISEUM ARENA RECONSTRUCTION

The Oakland Coliseum Arena reconstruction is 44 days behind
schedule, "raising the risk" that it won't be finished in time
for the start of the Warriors' '97 season, according to Renee
Koury of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. According to Warriors
attorney Robin Baggett, under terms of the agreements with the
city, county and team, if the project isn't completed in time,
Oakland and Alameda County would have to pay $125,000 in
penalties for every home game missed in Oakland next season.
Baggett: "We don't want to miss that opening day. So something
has to be resolved. This is cutting it too close." Baggett says
the Warriors, who are playing the '96 season at the San Jose
Arena, have "an option" to play November and December '97 in San
Jose too. Originally to be completed September 15 of '97, the
project got a late start due to financing delays. The $80M
project will expand the arena to 19,200 with 72 luxury boxes and
4,100 special club seats (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 10/18).
