  • HAKA BOWL HACKED BY THE NCAA

The NCAA Special Events Committee has revoked certification
for the '96 Haka Bowl since the bowl did not meet its October 15
deadline to provide a required financial guarantee. The bowl was
to have matched the third-place teams from the PAC-10 and the WAC
in a game in Auckland, New Zealand, December 27 (NCAA). The
absence of the Haka Bowl means the PAC-10 is guaranteed just four
bowl berths, instead of five (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/17). The Haka
Bowl planned to pay each team $1.5M and had a sponsorship
agreement with Air New Zealand (USA TODAY, 10/17).
