A NEW KING GEORGE IN BASEBALL? BRETT EYES ROYALS THRONE

Royals VP/Baseball Operations George Brett "rekindled the
flames" of his interest in buying the club at a season-ticket
holders luncheon yesterday, but an alliance between Brett and
Royals CEO David Glass "does not seem likely," according to Dick
Kaegel of the K.C. STAR. Last year, Brett inquired about buying
the team, but was told by Glass and the team's Board of Directors
it was not for sale. Kaegel adds that "ever since, there has
been a rift between the two." Brett: "I have no hard feelings
toward David, and I don't think he has any towards me. ... If he
wants me to be involved with his group, I'd certainly listen to
what he has planned." Kaegel cites an unnamed source that
disclosed "at least" two other parties outside Kansas City have
expressed interest in the Royals, which must be sold at auction
under terms of late Owner Ewing Kauffman's plans of succession
and rulings by the IRS. Glass wants to "hold off" selling the
club until a new CBA is signed, and added that "all potential
bidders have been told the team would have to stay in Kansas
City" (K.C. STAR, 9/27).
READ MY LIPS: The Royals have decided against raising
ticket prices in '97, according to Dick Kaegel of the K.C. STAR.
Seat prices will range from $5-14. Parking will stay at $5.
Royals VP/Marketing & Communications Mike Levy: "We want to give
people every reason to come to the ballpark. We don't want to be
unaffordable" (K.C. STAR, 9/27).
