PENNANT RACE TRACKER: DOES WILD CARD CHASE BOOST THE GATE?

In its second annual "Pennant Race Tracker," THE DAILY
examines MLB attendance over the second half of the season,
including team averages during the heat of the divisional and
wild card races. As the '96 season comes to a close, 12 of 13
clubs either in wild card contention -- or who have clinched
division titles over the last several days -- are enjoying strong
second half attendance. However, seven of the 13 teams have
shown a downward trend within the last month of the season. That
number would have been nine if not for strong gates in San Diego
and Seattle over the past weekend. NOTES: "1st Half Season
Average" is based on attendance at the All-Star break. "Now" is
of September 22. "Second Half Average" attendance "As of 8/25" is
from Opening Day-August 25. "Post-8/25" attendance is from August
25-September 22. "Overall" Second Half Average is from the All-
Star break-September 22.
