NFL PUTS THE KIBOSH ON L.A. SUPER BOWL PLANS

L.A. and Pasadena officials, who were preparing formal bids
for either the '99 or 2000 Super Bowl, met with NFL officials in
New York this week and were advised to "withdraw from the
process," according to T.J. Simers of the L.A. TIMES. The
L.A./Pasadena bid to play the game in the Rose Bowl "met
resistance from NFL officials," who "indicated" the league is not
ready to give the game to a team-less city. The NFL added,
however, is efforts to build a new stadium at the Coliseum site
are successful, L.A. will be placed on the list for the 2001
game. NFL President Neil Austrian: "If we can make progress on
the Coliseum project ...then I would say there is a high
likelihood NFL owners would support a Super Bowl being played
there in a brand-new Coliseum or the Rose Bowl" (L.A. TIMES,
9/26).
