     Former Bears Coach MIKE DITKA, who called himself "ultra
conservative," spoke at a fundraiser for Cook County State's
Attorney Jack O'Malley.  Ditka, on crime prevention: "I'm not so
sure that public hangings don't have a place in society" (CHICAGO
TRIBUNE, 9/23)....According to German magazine Der Spiegel,
STEFFI GRAF has reportedly received more than $2M in improper
appearance fees.  Der Spiegel obtained payment records from
documents available during pretrial discovery leading up to a
trial of Graf's father, Peter, for income tax evasion.  The GLOBE
& MAIL's Tom Tobbutt writes "a more serious question" is whether
Graf might be suspended by the WTA for the fees (Toronto GLOBE &
MAIL, 9/24)...Ford Motor Company and Lions Vice Chair WILLIAM
CLAY FORD, JR. was featured in the WALL STREET JOURNAL.  Ford "is
emerging as the next patriarch of one of America's wealthiest and
most powerful families" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/23)....RICHARD
PETTY, after his tailgating resulted in bumping a car in front of
him and leading to a $65.  Petty said the car slowed up which
resulted in him hitting it: "Now, if it had been a NASCAR
showdown, he would have been over in the ditch somewhere" (USA
TODAY, 9/23).
