     Retired NASCAR legend RICHARD PETTY, who is running for NC
Secretary of State, has been charged with reckless driving and
hit and run in connection with an accident on I-85 in Cabarrus
County, NC last week (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/19)....HIV-positive
heavyweight boxer TOMMY MORRISON is expected to announce he is
planning a comeback (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/19).....Dodgers pitcher
HIDEO NOMO celebrated his no-hitter Tuesday night at a Denver-
area 7-Eleven because no restaurants were open at 1:30am (SALT
LAKE TRIBUNE, 9/19). ....BOB DOLE mentioned NOMO in a speech, but
referred to the Dodgers as the "Brooklyn Dodgers."  Dole
spokesperson NELSON WARFIELD called the statement a "joke"
(NEWSDAY, 9/19). ...Salgado Productions said it intends to sue
the Sonics SHAWN KEMP for breach of contract after he failed to
appear at two movie shoots for its upcoming basketball film, "3
on 3."  The production company claims Kemp is not happy with his
contract (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE, 9/18)....WAYNE HUIZENGA, speaking
at the Arlington, TX Chamber of Commerce awards dinner, on his
AutoNation USA superstore: "AutoNation will become the next Wal-
Mart.  It's just unbelievable.  It's bigger and better than
Blockbuster.  It's $100 million ever time you open a lot" (FT.
WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 9/19).
