AT&T CLOSE TO SPONSORING INTER-STATE WAR IN TEXAS
Published August 27, 1996
Texas and Texas A&M officials could reach a deal by the end of the week to make AT&T a title sponsor for their annual game, "The AT&T Lone Star Showdown," beginning with this season's game November 29 in Austin, according to Jonathan Feigen of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. A two-year deal, with a two-year option, would pay each school $125,000 each season "in exchange for naming the game, logos in the stadium and possibly handouts to ticket holders." Univ. of Texas officials must gain approval from its board of regents in a meeting this week because "of portions of the agreement involving stadium handouts." Texas A&M AD Wally Groff said the school might also seek sponsorship for its annual game with Oklahoma (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/27).
