ICING IN AUGUST: WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY GETS SET TO DROP PUCK

     Enough tickets are being sold for the World Cup of Hockey to"keep organizers from despair," according to David Shoalts of theToronto GLOBE & MAIL.  The round-robin event begins August 26.Only one sellout is announced -- at The Globe in Stockholm -- butall representatives of North American venues are "confidentsellouts would be achieved."  The lowest reported ticket sales isat Madison Square Garden where the September 3 game between theU.S. and Slovakia has sold just 9,000 tickets.  Around 13,500seats have been sold for the U.S.-Russia game September 2.Rangers VP/Marketing Kevin Kennedy believes sales will "pick up"as "A lot of our advertising hasn't kicked in yet because it'sgeared to the last two weeks of August."  In Montreal, "therehave been reports of lukewarm response by season-ticket holders,"but NHLPA Media Relations Dir Steve McAllister said such reportsare premature because tickets "weren't offered to the public(until Saturday)."  McAllister added, "And as far as I know,ticket sales in Prague, Finland and Germany are going well."Officials in Ottawa and Philadelphia were pleased with theirsales to date (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/14).  The World Cup ispreviewed by Victor Chi in the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS.  Devils GMLou Lamoriello: "This is going to be an incredible treat" (SANJOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/13).     THAT'S MATHIEU TO YOU: Former Dir of PR/Marketing for theBlues, Susie Mathieu, is Managing Dir of the World Cup, and isprofiled by Robert MacLeod of the GLOBE & MAIL.  Mathieu isconfident that with worldwide TV distribution deals, the eventwill turn a "tidy profit."  Any profit is shared equally betweenthe NHL and NHLPA.  Sponsors for the event include Nike, MolsonBreweries, MasterCard, IBM, Anheuser-Busch, Air Canada,Dodge/Chrysler, and Canadian Tire.  Mathieu would not reveal theevent's budget or how much each sponsor is paying (Toronto GLOBE& MAIL, 8/14).     TV TIME: Mennen, Mountain Dew, All Sport, Nike and theDiscovery Channel have signed deals to buy ad time on U.S.coverage of the event.  They join Dodge, A-B, the U.S. Army, andBauer.  fX, assorted RSN's and a number of local stations willcover the games.  Additional deals are still in the works, withboth a telecom company and overnight courier service.  LibertySports Sales is selling the commercial time (Reynolds &Brockinton, INSIDE MEDIA, 8/14).
