GIANTS GET HEAT ON PLAYER'S ACTIONS DURING AIDS CEREMONY

City officials and gay activists are calling on the S.F.
Giants to trade or release pitcher Mark Dewey after his actions
during the team's "Until There's a Cure" AIDS benefit at 3Com
Park. Dewey, a fundamentalist Christian, would not walk on the
field when other players "demonstrated their solidarity with the
fight against AIDS." During the game, Dewey wore his red AIDS
symbol sideways, "which made the looped ribbon also resemble the
Christian fish symbol." The Giants had no comment on the
dispute. Dewey said he wanted to show "compassion" for those
infected with HIV, but added that some elements of the campaign
"run counter to his spiritual beliefs" (Nancy Gay, S.F.
CHRONICLE, 7/31).
